Chapter 27: Kenny

I OPENED MY EYES WHEN they started stinging; the sunlight bothering them even when they were closed. In my dorm, I had blackout curtains so I could be comfortable sleeping at any hour. I went to turn away from the beams of painful light, but then I felt Hunter’s body beside me, rather, a little on top of me. We had fallen asleep in our boxers on the narrow couch. I tried to get up without waking him and failed.

“Huh..?” he mumbled, blinking slowly beside me.

“I’m getting up,” I announced, lifting him off of me without effort, and sliding out from under him. He said something else in that sleepy, indecipherable voice, while I made sure the curtains were fully closed.

I went into the bathroom to piss, and realized while I washed up that I hadn’t seen Elijah. I pulled open the shower curtain, and found the tub empty. I checked the bedroom and found the covers undisturbed.

A kink in my back flared up with a vengeance, screaming why couldn’t we have slept in that nice comfy bed?

I wasn’t super concerned about Elijah being gone. After all, he was obnoxious, and I couldn’t imagine having to tolerate him every day, like Hunter had to. Still, after the ordeal with Bethany, I decided I needed to make sure he was alright.

I came back into the living room shaking Hunter awake.

“What?” He asked, sounding irate.

“Your friend’s gone. Did he say anything to you?”

Slowly, Hunter drew himself into a seated position, rubbing his temples with both hands.

“No.” He managed.

“Did he text you?”

“Where... where’s my phone?” He dug in the cushions for a moment before I spotted it charging on the kitchen counter and brought it over to him. He sighed and flipped onto his back, unlocking the device with his thumbprint. His shirt rode up, and I caught another glimpse of his stomach, crossed with dark hairs that crept down below his waistband.

“Yeah.” He sighed at last. “He went back to school. Would you mind giving me a ride back?”

“He was your ride?” I curled my lip. “That’s pretty rude. What if I was going to be busy?”

He looked at me, cute even with his hair a mess and slight bags under his eyes. “Are you?” He asked.

“No, I don’t mind... Is everything alright with him?” Not that I really cared.

“I don’t know. He did seem pissed at me last night until he started barfing.”

“Maybe he was just drunk.”

“That, he definitely was.” Hunter ran a hand through his hair. “But I don’t know... He might have taken it personally that I ditched him to hang out with you.”

“He’ll get over it,” I said gruffly.

“Maybe...”

While Hunter got lost in his phone, I tidied up the apartment, washing the wine glasses we had used and putting the towels Elijah had left balled up in the bathroom into a hamper. I checked my watch as I finished up.

“You ready to get out of here?” I asked.

Hunter groaned. “Isn’t it a little early?”

“By now, we would have been at work for three hours.
